The Origin of Peace
(WCRP Bulletin)
More than fifty years ago, during my student days, a professor once shared a memory I have never forgotten. He said: “When I asked my elderly mother when she first thought of me as dear, she replied: ‘One day I suddenly realized I had conceived you. That night, I felt such love and tenderness for the child in my womb that I stroked my belly all night and could not sleep.’” As he spoke, tears filled his eyes.
Later, as a working adult, I once met a woman in Izumo (Shimane Prefecture) who said to me: “The sun (hi 日)— the spirit (hi 霊) — has stopped at my daughter‑in‑law’s shrine.” I was deeply moved by this way of expressing pregnancy, and impressed that such profound words were still alive in Izumo.
Around the same time, I also heard an elderly woman remark: “If a pregnant woman sees a fire, it will bring misfortune to the child in her womb.” As a young man, I found such words puzzling.
By then, however, our generation had already shifted from the parents’ view of “receiving a child” to “making a child.” Indeed, one could even hear casual voices saying, “We got pregnant — now which way should we go?” Moreover, newborns were quickly separated from their mothers and placed in nurseries, with artificial formula prioritized over breast milk.
In the past ten‑plus years, it has been encouraging to see growing reflection on childbirth and child‑rearing. Yet I cannot help but question how much of what infants eat, wear, and use truly carries the touch of their mothers’ hands.
For the unborn child, the mother’s womb should be a utopia — a place of absolute security. But how well are babies protected from the “fires” of the mother’s own inner wounds, anxieties, and irritations, which can become disasters of the heart?
Moreover, when human beings — who are themselves natural creatures — are continually exposed to artificial substances both inside and out, I fear their true nature may be harmed. In that light, the cases of mother tigers or elephants in zoos abandoning their young no longer seem distant from us. We must never forget that humans too are living beings, animals, and indeed mammals.
For a baby, the mother is a truly precious being — with her whole body she represents all humanity, teaching the importance and dignity of trust.
I have often told young people I meet that the great ocean of world peace can only be formed when countless drops of trust, born from the bond between mother and child, come together.
Mr. Mori Ayao, the Second Principal
(Okayama Nishi Special Needs School Support Association Bulletin)
In the early Shōwa 40s (around 1965), I was serving as a member of the Prefectural Child Welfare Council. The person leading the council was Mr. Kajinami Kakusuke, a native of Kajinami Village (now part of Mimasaka City). His character carried the weight of tradition, not something achieved in a single generation.
Around the autumn of Shōwa 55 (1980), two men I deeply respected — Mr. Kajitani Chūji, former chairman of the Okayama Chamber of Commerce and Industry and founder of Kimuraya Bakery, and Mr. Kawakami Kameyoshi, former superintendent of education for Okayama Prefecture — visited me, bringing along a man of strikingly robust build. This was Mr. Mori Ayao. From the very first impression, even his voice seemed familiar. Indeed, I soon realized he was the younger brother of Mr. Kajinami Kakusuke.
Mr. Kajitani and Mr. Kawakami then spoke in turn, saying: “Mr. Mori has just been appointed the second principal of the newly established Prefectural Nishi School for the Handicapped. For some time there had been calls for such a school, and at last it has been born here in Okayama. Yet although the school has opened, in many respects it still lacks much. Therefore, we wish to form an Educational Support Association to serve as a kind of cheering section for this Nishi School. We would like you to become its president. The two of us will serve as vice presidents to support you, so please accept this role.”
For me, to decline such words from these two men — both senior figures of an age like that of my own parents — was impossible. And so, though weak and inexperienced, I was entrusted with this great responsibility under these circumstances.
The two vice presidents went on to select one distinguished figure after another as officers of the Support Association, while Principal Mori, serving as secretary‑general, launched into tireless activity. He visited leaders in the business community to raise funds, and at the same time recruited members widely, especially among parents in the PTA.
Thanks to these efforts, Nishi School, which had begun by repurposing an old prefectural facility building, gradually took shape as a proper school.
When it came to the “hardware” of school facilities, the “software” side was equally remarkable. Distinguished figures deeply versed in child welfare visited the school one after another — among them Ms. Akiyama Chieko, well known from radio, and Princess Yi Bangja (Lee Masako), who had married from the Japanese Imperial family into Prince Yi Un the last prince of the Korea’s Joseon dynasty. Their talks moved many hearts profoundly.
Looking back now, I believe it was Mr. Mori Ayao’s deep thoughtfulness and strong love for these children that inspired Messers Kajitani and Kawakami, and together they brought about the true “creation” of Nishi School.
Finally, I would like to express my heartfelt prayers for Mr. Mori Ayao’s continued good health and well‑being.
Wishing for Deep Concern
(Nanya Children’s Home Support Association Bulletin “Nanya”)
Once, when asked what the opposite of “love” was, most people would answer “hatred.” But I believe it was after Mother Teresa came to Japan that many began to say instead, “indifference.”
Mother Teresa remarked: “Japan has developed so greatly, and yet there are so many lonely and unhappy people. Why is this? Perhaps it is because people are too absorbed in themselves, and indifferent to others — especially to the weak.” I think her words were the turning point.
That is why I am always deeply grateful that so many people — beginning with the local community — show concern for the children of Nanya Children’s Home. This began with the founder, Mr. Dokō Umajirō, whose high virtue earned the respect of many, and with the devotion of the Dokō family to the Home. On top of this foundation, the Home has been blessed with its present director, Mr. Kanahara Tsukushi, who, together with his wife, has lived among the children since his youth at Seitoku School, protecting and nurturing them as if they were his own. He has become the great pillar of the institution.
The annual Support Association General Meeting held each June was, this year again, filled with the warm hearts of those who care for “Nanya.” In addition to the May “Nanya Festival,” the February Setsubun celebration (the ritual to welcome spring with the bean‑scattering rite to drive away evil), and the December Mochitsuki rice‑cake pounding event — all supported by dedicated volunteers — we continue to receive the power and participation of many. I would like to renew my heartfelt request that such warm concern always be directed toward the children.
