(150 Years of Kaguraoka Munetada Shrine in Kyoto
Kurozumikyō: In the Upheaval From the Late Edo to the Meiji, Part 1)
(Published August 2012)
I have already written several times about the 150th Anniversary Festival of Kaguraoka Munetada Shrine in Kyoto, to be held this autumn on November 3–4. Here, I would like once again to trace that great flow of history, like a mighty river.
教祖宗忠神(Munetada the Divine Founder)の「天命直授(てんめいじきじゅ Tenmei Jikiku (the Direct Bestowal of Heaven’s Mandate))」
1. The Founding of Kurozumikyō — Munetada the Divine Founder and the “Direct Bestowal of Heaven’s Mandate” (Tenmei Jikiju)
Bunka 11 (1814)
On the 11th day of 11th month of Bunka 11 (1814, lunar calendar), the winter solstice, Munetada the Divine Founder received the great inspiration known as Tenmei Jikiku 天命直授 or the “Direct Bestowal of Heaven’s Mandate” while worshipping the sunrise. The meaning of this revelation is profound and far‑reaching, but above all it revealed both the true nature of Amaterasu Ōmikami and the true nature of humankind.
In a sacred verse he said:
The virtue of Amaterasu Ōmikami who illuminates heaven is a blessing that fills heaven and earth without lack.
And he also wrote:
“Amaterasu Ōmikami is the Great Goddess who brings forth all things.”
Furthermore:
“My true heart is Bunshin 分心 or the portion of Amaterasu Ōmikami; if I cherish this god of the heart, that is the true heart.”
And again:
“There is no separation between Amaterasu Ōmikami and humankind. To think directly that one is divine is joy itself. When the heart of Amaterasu Ōmikami and the human heart become one, one has an everlasting life.”
Thus, the teaching establishes a view of humanity: the Divine Parent of Heaven and Earth, Amaterasu Ōmikami—the source of life—and human beings, in whom the Bunshin (each person’s portion of Amaterasu Ōmikami’s spirit) dwells, are originally one. This is the principle of shinjin funi 神人不二(oneness of gods and humanity). In other words, the great source of life, Amaterasu Ōmikami, and human beings are directly connected through Bunshin.
Tenmei Jikiku was also the moment when prayers for the prosperity of Amaterasu Ōmikami began.
2. The Sermon at Tamai Shrine — Kōka 3 (1846)
In the Chronological Record of Kurozumikyō Kyōsho (the collection of Divine Founder’s verses and writings), under the entry for Kōka 3 (1846), it states:
“On the 18th of the third month, at Tamai Shrine 玉井宮 in Bizen‑Okayama, there was a sermon (by the Divine Founder) to calm the disturbed hearts of the people and to bring peace to the divine will of Amaterasu Ōmikami.”
By this time, great changes were already appearing in our country, with signs of both internal unrest and external threat.
On the 26th of the first month of that year, Emperor Ninkō passed away, and Emperor Kōmei—later deeply connected with Kurozumikyō—ascended the throne. In Edo (Tokyo), great fires broke out one after another, while fleets from America, France, and Britain approached Japan’s shores. These events seemed to foreshadow the upheaval that would culminate in the Meiji Restoration twenty‑one years later. The famous arrival of Commodore Perry’s American fleet came seven years later, in Kaei 6 (1853).
From the sunrise‑worship site at Shintōzan, one can see the hill of Higashiyama. At Tamai Shrine enshrined on the slope of Higashiyama since the ancient time, the Divine Founder gave sermons on the eighteenth day of each month. On this particular day, the 18th of the third month, many retainers of the Okayama domain were present, including High Disciple Jikihara Ihachirō. The following account is a summary of what High Disciple Jikihara left in writing.
On that day, the Divine Founder began by saying he had seen a wondrous dream:
“A summons arrived from nowhere, and when I presented myself, it was at the grand courtyard of a great palace. As I bowed low, many nobles in court robes appeared. From the center, one declared: ‘Now, in this time of great turmoil, we appoint you as governor. You must calm the disorder of the world.’
Unable to reply otherwise, I said: ‘Though I am but an unworthy one, to receive such a heavy charge is most awe‑inspiring. Yet, as commanded, I will devote my very life to pacify the world and bring peace to the Great Divine Heart.’”
The Divine Founder then said: “All of you gathered here, I ask that you share in my resolve, and together devote your strength to the peace of people’s hearts and the security of the nation.”
That year, Kōka 3 (1846), was also a major turning point for our faith.
Ten days before the Tamai Shrine sermon, on March 8, the Divine Founder was aboard a ship off Kojima in Okayama when a sudden storm threatened disaster. He composed a verse:
Calm now the waves, and still the winds, O God of the Sea!
For one who knows Amaterasu Ōmikami rides upon this vessel today.
At once, the wind and rain subsided, and all were saved. Among the passengers was Itō Sadasaburō of Kurayoshi in Tottori, steward to Funaki Jin’ichi. Through him, Jin’ichi came to know our faith.
That same year, the first set of organizational regulations—the Kōka 3 Regulations—was established by the senior disciples. In addition, plans were announced to build what would become the first Daikyōden 大教殿, today known as the Founder’s Memorial Hall at Ōmoto, the sacred site.
3. High Disciple Akagi Tadaharu’s Lecture before Emperor Kōmei
Upon the Founder’s ascension on the 25th day of the second month of Kaei 3 (1850, lunar calendar), seven of his high disciples set out to preach the Way in the places designated by sacred divination. With firm resolve, they embarked on missionary journeys, carrying deeply within themselves the heart of Munetada the Divine Founder with eternal life. It was a departure undertaken in the spirit of self‑sacrifice.
The year Kaei 5 (1852) saw remarkable activity by High Disciple Akagi Tadaharu, who had been assigned to Kyoto, the imperial capital. His reputation reached Chancellor Kujō Hisatada, and High Disciple Akagi was invited to the Kujō residence. There, he prayed, preached, and interceded for Princess Asako, who lay gravely ill. (Note) She recovered with great joy and gratitude.
Since Princess Asako was already consort to Emperor Kōmei, the matter came to the Emperor’s attention. High Disciple Akagi was then granted the honor of delivering a lecture before His Majesty. At that time, the Emperor bestowed upon him an imperial poem:
In the land of the Way of the Jeweled Spear,
appears Munetada, a god who stands alongside the sun and moon.
In the words “Munetada, a god who stands alongside the sun and moon,” we can see that High Disciple Akagi conveyed the very core of the Divine Founder’s revelation of Tenmei Jikiju.
It signifies that Emperor Kōmei, while naturally affirming Amaterasu Ōmikami as the Imperial Ancestor, also came to recognize Amaterasu Ōmikami as the Parent Deity of heaven and earth—the cosmic source of life itself. This is the testimony that he grasped the universal dimension of Amaterasu Ōmikami beyond the imperial lineage.
Note: In Professor Mayumi Tsunetada’s book Emperor Kōmei and Munetada Shrine, Princess Asako’s illness is dated to around Ansei 5–6 (1858–59, p.17). However, since her first child passed away on the 17th day of the sixth month of Kaei 5 (1852), and she then fell ill, it seems likely that High Disciple Akagi’s intercession took place at that earlier time.
