RSK Sanyo Broadcasting Radio (affiliated with TBS), which opened in Okayama in 1953 as one of the private broadcasting stations, has since its founding made it a tradition to begin its New Year’s Day broadcast with the greeting “Celebrating the New Spring delivered by the Chief Patriarch of Kurozumikyō. From 1973, when the present Sixth Chief Patriarch succeeded to leadership, this broadcast has continued, and this year as well it was aired at 5 a.m. on New Year’s Day, unchanged from former times.
Below we present this year’s New Year’s broadcast, “Celebrating the New Spring. (Editorial Office)
What impression do you have when you hear the word “religion? In fact, there are many points in common among all religions. One of these, found in every religion in Japan, is the concern with how to nurture hara 腹 (abdomen).
In Buddhist sutras, and likewise in our Shintō norito 祝詞 (ritual prayers), it is said that the voice must come from hara—from the lower abdomen—before it can be considered genuine. In this sense, even though no voice is uttered, the practice of sitting in meditation (zazen) is truly a way of nurturing hara.
Since ancient times, the Japanese language has been said to be a profoundly vital language. It often expresses the workings of the heart by reference to parts of the body, and among these, the word “hara is especially frequent.
We speak of worry as “my head is bound or “my head aches, and of being moved as “my chest grows hot or “my chest is struck. But when it comes to hara, the expressions are countless. From the pain of the heart—“my stomach rises in anger, “my entrails boil over, “a feeling of gut‑wrenching grief—to positive qualities—“a pure stomach, “a broad abdomen, “a settled abdomen—even at a glance more than twenty such expressions come to mind.
We do not deny that, as today’s science says, the seat of the mind lies in the head, in the brain. Yet in another sense, hara may be called the seat of the soul—the heart within the heart.
Every religion acknowledges and believes in the existence and activity of the soul, and each can be said to have its own practice for how to calm and nurture it. To value the nurturing of hara is, indeed, no exaggeration to say that it is for the nurturing of the soul itself.
In today’s world, perhaps because so many people feel anxiety about their health, various movements for health are flourishing. Among these, what we find especially welcome is that more and more people are teaching the importance of breathing methods. Of all the organs of the human body, those connected with breathing are the only ones that can be controlled by one’s own will. Therefore, if adjusting the breath becomes a daily habit, a way of life, then it is truly wonderful, for it means adjusting both body and mind.
As a common teaching in breathing methods, one breathes with the lower abdomen—so‑called abdominal breathing. One straightens the backbone, moves the lower abdomen forward and back, and breathes. Moreover, it is emphasized that one exhales through the mouth, especially taking time to exhale slowly and completely. In fact, here too lies a way of nurturing the soul, and this is why, from the standpoint of a religious practitioner, we find it so heartening
The practice of physical health methods today can be expected to help keep the mind sound, and upon that foundation, to lead further to the nurturing of the soul.
A few years ago, I was taught by a specialist that the center of the human body’s innate immune power lies in the small intestine. I was deeply impressed and convinced. We often hear of stomach cancer, colon cancer, rectal cancer, liver and pancreatic cancer, but rarely of cancer of the small intestine. The small intestine, after all, is the organ that forms the very center of hara, the lower abdomen.
In any case, the seat of the soul is at the same time the very lifeline of life, and it seems certain that this lies in the lower abdomen.
Another point common to all religions is the valuing of prayer and service. Prayer is the time for nurturing the soul, and what accompanies prayer is the purification of the heart—the cleansing and purifying of the heart, which is the vessel of the soul. Service, as the word itself suggests, is to serve and offer oneself to the divine, and with that same spirit to devote sincerity to people and to society. In service there is a dynamism: like a boomerang, what is given circles back and returns. The refreshing sweat of service, the joy born when others are gladdened, has the power to cleanse and enrich our own hearts, and is the finest nourishment for nurturing the soul.
In today’s age, when human life tends to become inorganic and therefore lacking in emotion, I have been recommending to everyone I meet that they begin with breathing methods as one form of health practice. At the same time, I suggest that each day, even once, they strive to bring joy to others. In this way, I hope that it will lead to the cultivation of persons whose hara is settled, whose hara is pure, and whose hearts are warm.
The heart is nothing but the living thing that is apart from being and nothingness of Heaven and Earth.(Outa No. 110)
To the question where the heart of Heaven and Earth is, the answer should be “in my own heart”(Outa No. 18)
