(Awaiting the Release of the Film The Poem of the Great Earth)
(Published in the May 2010 issue)
In recent years, there was a film that could truly be said to have stirred a refreshing breeze: Thank You, Father Ishii. This work introduced the life of Rev. Ishii Jūji, who was also a pastor, and who in the Meiji era took in unfortunate children — orphans — in Okayama, at times raising as many as 1,200 and sending them forth into society. It conveyed without omission his robust life, in which the spirit of the samurai was applied directly for the sake of the weak, and it also depicted his warm friendship with Mr. Ōhara Magosaburō of Kurashiki, now famous as the founder of the Ōhara Museum of Art, which deeply moved audiences.
The film was directed by Ms. Yamada Hisako, and through orphanages and care facilities in places deeply connected with Ishii Jūji, such as Okayama and Miyazaki, it was quietly yet widely shown across the nation.
Following this, Director Yamada has now taken up another figure from Okayama, the social reformer Rev. Tomeoka Kōsuke, and has begun production of The Poem of the Great Earth (working title): My Heart’s Tomeoka Kōsuke.
In her statement of purpose, the director writes as follows:
“In the Meiji era, in order to save young people called delinquents, he established a reformatory, saying, ‘If even one can be rehabilitated, it will be a benefit to the nation.’ And because children who did not know the warmth of a family would fall further into wrongdoing, he created the Home School so that they would not be stained by evil any more. I am now producing a film about Rev. Tomeoka Kōsuke.
Why Rev. Tomeoka Kōsuke now? Because it seems that something is missing in the relationship between children, parents, and schools. Compared with the past, the general standard of living has improved, and families are materially better provided for. Yet the way families once lived — poor but content, sharing joys and sorrows, parents and children confronting each other earnestly, living closely together — has diminished. Unlike the old days of having nothing, today expenses are heavy, and parents must both work simply to live. In such circumstances, mothers must also be working women. I understand the hardships women face in modern society, but to raise children well, a mother’s love is indispensable.
By shining a spotlight on Rev. Tomeoka’s ideals, I hope this film will be of service in the education of mothers and children.”
Rev. Tomeoka Kōsuke (1864–1934), born in what is now Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture, was, like Rev. Ishii Jūji, a Christian who carried the spirit of the samurai. He was a man of strong chivalrous compassion, unable to overlook injustice or the plight of the weak. While still young he went to Hokkaidō and became a prison chaplain, but he became convinced that what juvenile offenders lacked was the warmth of a family, and that this was the true power to reform them. In 1899 (Meiji 32) he began the Home School in Sugamo, Tokyo. Later, in 1914 (Taishō 3), he founded the Hokkaidō Home School on vast land in Engaru, where boys were reformed and raised through agricultural activity.
The book Ichiro Hakutō ni Itaru (“A Life Journeying Toward White Hair”), written by Mr. Takase Yoshio and published in the Iwanami Shinsho series, gives a detailed account of the life of Rev. Tomeoka Kōsuke. In it we read: “Believing that human beings must coexist with nature, he emphasized the ‘influence of nature’… He sought to raise children by taking nature itself as their teacher.”
In line with this, he advocated what he called the “Three Abilities Principle” (San’nō Shugi): to reform delinquent youths, one must ensure that they “work well, eat well, and sleep well.” Indeed, his verse “Children who are cared for more by cows than by people” reflects both his spirit and the daily life of the Home School.
In particular, the pamphlet introducing the film Poem of the Great Earth included the following sayings of Rev. Tomeoka Kōsuke:
“Merely attending school does not produce heroes or great men. Whether one becomes a gentleman or a thief depends on the cultivation provided by the atmosphere of the home. Yet today’s homes are nothing more than boarding houses.”
“In education, the most important thing is the family. Next in importance are the school and society. Where on earth is the most suitable place to educate a child? Oxford, Harvard, Yale, Berlin? The foundation for making human beings good lies in the family.”
“Education in our country lacks warmth of feeling. This deficiency produces many bad results. Parents think that if only the school is attended, the child will improve. But in truth, education is two parts school and eight parts family.”
Needless to say, these sayings were born long ago, in the Meiji (1868–1912), Taishō (1912–1926), and early Shōwa (1926–1989) eras. Yet, though the expressions differ, are they not still painfully relevant to us today?
They appeal to the importance of the family and emphasize the value of human warmth. Basic human courtesies — greetings, never telling lies, never taking what belongs to others, never bullying the weak — are all things instilled from early childhood by parents and grandparents, acquired naturally in the course of daily life.
Furthermore, warmth of feeling is nurtured when families devote themselves together to the same tasks, as if in shared work. Beginning with bowing together before the family altar, eating meals together, cleaning together — how much of these ordinary aspects of daily life are truly practiced today? A way of life that regards only school grades as sufficient ends up being a way of life that focuses solely on earning money, cutting away everything deemed unnecessary, and in the end produces people without warmth of feeling.
As Director Yamada also wrote, for parents and children to “confront each other more earnestly and live closely together as a family,” parents themselves must exert greater wisdom. Even if one does not go so far as delinquency and crime, we must not allow the rise of self‑centered individuals lacking warmth of feeling and sound judgment, with little consideration for others.
Poem of the Great Earth is awaited as a film of admonition for today’s society, one that we hope will be seen by many people.
