達人の祈り
(The Prayer of a Master)

　過ぐる正月元旦のテレビでご覧になった方もおありかと思いますが、プロ野球ファンならずとも多くの人が知っているイチロー選手の、「ぼくの歩んだ道」というＮＨＫＢＳの長時間番組がありました。あれだけの選手ですから、常に身を削るような細心の心配りと鍛練を重ねているとは思っていましたし、そういう日々が一人の人間としてその人となりを高め深めているだろうとも思っていました。しかし、この番組を見て改めてすごい人物であることに驚き入りました。

On New Year’s Day, many may have seen the long NHK BS program “The Path I Have Walked” featuring Ichiro, the baseball player known far beyond baseball fans. As one would expect of such an athlete, he lives with constant discipline and meticulous care, refining himself day by day. I had assumed that such training also deepened his character as a human being. Yet watching this program, I was struck anew by what an extraordinary person he truly is.

　最も胸うたれたのは、大リーグの年間最多安打２５７本を超えた時の話でした。
　プロ野球選手としてヒットを積み重ねることを大きな目標としているイチロー選手は、これまた多くの方がご存じのように昨年も２００本以上のヒットを打って、１０年間連続して２００本を超えるという大リーグ新記録を打ち立てました。そういう彼にとって、ジョージ・シスラーという選手が８４年前に作った年間２５７本という大リーグ記録は、目指すべき目標であったようです。このことが話題になっている時、画面にシスラー選手の孫が登場しました。この人はやはりおじいさんの記録は破られたくない思いがあったことを率直に述べていましたが、イチロー選手がセントルイス市郊外のシスラー選手のお墓に参っている写真を見せられた時、このお孫さんは絶句してしまいました。“自分はイチロー選手が祖父のお墓に行ったことは聞いていたが、このようにひざまずいて手を合わせて祈っていたとは･･････”と言うと、見る見る両眼に涙が湧き出てきました。イチロー選手はこの映像を見ながら、“こういうことには弱いんですが……”と言いながらも、その眼（め）には光るものが浮かんでいました。テレビにくぎ付けになっていた私も、まぶたが熱くなるのを禁じえませんでした。

What moved me most was the story of Ichiro surpassing the Major League record of 257 hits in a single season. For him, accumulating hits was a lifelong goal, and he had already set a new record with ten consecutive seasons of over 200 hits. The mark of 257, set 84 years earlier by George Sisler, was the target he pursued.
During the program, Sisler’s grandson appeared, openly admitting he hoped his grandfather’s record would remain unbroken. But when shown a photograph of Ichiro kneeling and praying at Sisler’s grave near St. Louis, he was struck speechless. With tears welling in his eyes, he said, “I knew Ichiro had visited, but I never realized he prayed like this.”
Watching the footage, Ichiro himself confessed, “I am weak in moments like these…” as his own eyes glistened. I, too, found myself transfixed before the television, unable to hold back the heat rising in my eyelids.

　続いてイチロー選手は、あの時（お墓参りの時）以来、調子が上がって新記録を残すことができたこと、あの時何かが降りて来て自分を押してくれたように思う･･････というようなことを一言ひとことかみしめるように語りました。

Ichiro went on to say that ever since his visit to George Sisler’s grave, his performance improved and he was able to set the new record. He spoke slowly, savoring each word, saying it felt as though something had descended upon him and pushed him forward.

　このテレビ番組は、私にとりまして今年のお正月のひとつの大きな感動となりました。

For me, this television program became one of the great inspirations of this New Year.

　昨年の重大事件のひとつに挙げられていてご記憶の方も多かろうと思いますが、７年間、宇宙空間を６０億キロも飛び続けた小惑星探査機「はやぶさ」が、世界で初めて月以外の天体に着陸して無事地球に帰って来たという大ニュースがありました。このことは、鈴木、根本両博士のノーベル賞受賞というニュースとともに、私たち国民の心に大きな喜びを与えてくれました。

Among last year’s major events, one that many will remember was the triumphant return of the asteroid explorer Hayabusa. After flying 6 billion kilometers over seven years in space, it became the first mission in the world to land on a celestial body other than the Moon and safely return to Earth.
Together with the news of Nobel Prizes awarded to Dr. Suzuki and Dr. Nemoto, this achievement brought immense joy and pride to the hearts of the Japanese people.

　太陽を中心とした地球をはじめとする惑星の起源を探るため、はるか宇宙空間に発見された「イトカワ」と名付けられた小惑星に向けて「はやぶさ」は打ち上げられ、この「イトカワ」の岩石の一部を採取して帰る使命を担っていたのです。

The asteroid explorer Hayabusa was launched to study the origins of Earth and the planets around the Sun, with the mission of reaching the asteroid “Itokawa” and bringing back fragments of its rock.

　一昨年の秋、この「はやぶさ」のイオンエンジンという特別のエンジン４台がすべて故障し、危険な状態に陥りました。チーフリーダーの川口淳一郎教授は、そのうち１台のエンジンの「中和器」という重要部分が無事なことを発見し、この中和器を使っての調整に努められるのですがうまくいきません。切羽詰まった教授はインターネットを使って「中和」という名の付いた神社を探し、岡山の県北、真庭市に鎮座する中和神社（正しくはちゅうか神社と称する）を探し出し、早速お参りされたということです。そのお参り、お祈りは、まことに真剣なものだったと入澤喜一（よしかず）宮司は話されています。

In the autumn two years ago, all four of Hayabusa’s special ion engines failed, placing the mission in grave danger. Professor Kawaguchi Jun’ichirō, the chief leader, discovered that the neutralizer of one engine was still intact and tried to adjust the system using it, but without success. In desperation, he searched the internet for a shrine bearing the name “Chūwa 中和” (neutralizer) and found Chūka Shrine 中和神社 in Maniwa City, northern Okayama Prefecture. He immediately went to pray there. According to Chief Priest Irisawa Yoshikazu, his prayer was deeply earnest.

　神奈川県相模原市の管制室に取って返った教授は、再び三度（みたび）努められたところ、中和器は作動して「はやぶさ」は地球への軌道に乗ることができたのでした。

Returning to the control room in Sagamihara in Kanagawa Prefecture, Professor Kawaguchi tried once more, and this time the neutralizer worked—Hayabusa was able to enter its trajectory back to Earth.

　私たちには、はるか宇宙のかなたを飛ぶ機械を地球上でコントロールし、修理までするということ自体が不思議なことですが、そのような宇宙工学の最先端にいる方が、祈りをもって事に当たり、しかも事が成就したという事実に驚嘆し、感服しました。

For us, it is already astonishing that a machine flying billions of kilometers away in deep space can be controlled and even repaired from Earth. But what struck me most was that a leading figure at the forefront of space engineering approached the crisis with prayer, and that the mission succeeded.

　川口教授は次のように述べられています。

Professor Kawaguchi remarked:

　「このトラブル以来、私は信心深くなったのです。自分たちが判断して対処できるところまで、神頼みしようとは思いません。しかしどうしても分からない部分が残ります。通信途絶も、最終的には復旧しないという結果になるかもしれない。打てる手は打った上で、最後にどう転ぶかは“運”次第といえます。だから、私たちが期待する結果に転がるよう、神頼みしたのです。トラブル解決への意気込みを保つための“気持ちの支え”という側面もありました。ご利益があったのか、その後のイオンエンジンは調子を維持し、帰還直前の軌道修正では一度も、みじんの異常も起きませんでした。打ち上げ後、初めてのパーフェクトな運転でした。はやぶさが本当に致命的な故障を免れたのは、幸運以外の何ものでもないと思います」（毎日新聞平成２２年７月７日号）

“Since that trouble, I have become more faithful. I do not pray for matters we can judge and handle ourselves. But there are always parts we cannot understand. Communication failures, for example, may ultimately prove impossible to restore. After exhausting every possible measure, the final outcome depends on fortune. So I prayed that events would turn toward the result we hoped for. Prayer also gave me emotional strength to keep striving for a solution.
Perhaps there was divine favor, for after that the ion engine maintained its condition. In the final trajectory correction before return, not a single abnormality occurred. It was the first perfect operation since launch. That Hayabusa escaped fatal failure was nothing but sheer good fortune.” (The Mainichi Shimbun Newspaper, July 7, 2010)

　昨年の１０月末、中和神社にはこの川口教授らの御礼参拝の姿がありました。何様が祭られているかも分からない、ただ同じ「中和」という名の付いた神社というだけで参り、ひたすら祈られたのです。このことは、祈る人の祈りがいかに大事かを物語っています。

At the end of October last year, Professor Kawaguchi and his team visited Chūka Shrine to offer thanks. They had prayed there earlier simply because the shrine’s name matched the “neutralizer” part of the ion engine, without even knowing which god was enshrined. Their earnest prayer itself proved significant.

　教祖神は「祈りは日乗り」と御教えになり、「本体の祈りにて、かなわぬことは無きことなり」と言い切られ、「人々の誠のところより、天地の誠のいきものを、よびいだす」と説かれました。

The Divine Founder taught: “To pray is to join the sun (Inori wa hinori 祈りは日乗り). With true prayer, nothing is unattainable. From the sincerity of people, sincere Ikinomo いきもの (the divine life energy) of Heaven and Earth is called forth.”

　川口教授は、期せずしてここのところを実践されていたのです。

Unintentionally, Professor Kawaguchi had embodied this very teaching.
