(The Oshiraishi-mochi (Carrying of White Stones) Ceremony at Ise Jingu — Moving Service of Worship)

Solemn Offering of Oshiraishi (Pure White Stones)
“Passing through the First Gate (Outer Tamagaki South Gate), where white cloth usually hangs, then through the Second Gate (Inner Tamagaki South Gate), beneath whose roof even His Majesty the Emperor may not go beyond, and further on through the Third Gate (Mizugaki South Gate), there stood the new Main Sanctuary. Just then the clouds parted, and a flood of sunlight poured down. The new shrine was so divine it felt almost too sacred to gaze upon. Though the sacred object had not yet been transferred, it already seemed as if Amaterasu Ōmikami was present, noble and awe‑inspiring.”
After completing all the acts of service in the Oshiraishi-mochi (carrying of white stones) ceremony, we relaxed together under the large tent, feeling both relief and a pleasant weariness. While waiting for the closing assembly to begin, the person seated next to me spoke words of deep emotion. I believe it was the shared sentiment of all 1,939 participants.
From the moment we looked up at the Outer Tamagaki South Gate, we felt the overwhelming presence of master craftsmanship — so precise, yet infused with prayer. The sharp yet serene cut of the thatched roof’s gable conveyed both strength and harmony.
Each time we visit the shrine, we are permitted to advance close enough to pray for Amaterasu Ōmikami’s prosperity, but this time we passed beyond even the Inner Tamagaki South Gate, which is never otherwise seen. Holding the sacred white stones in both hands, our grip grew stronger. Passing through the Mizugaki South Gate — a gate we would never again approach so closely — we emerged into the blazing midsummer sun. There stood the new Main Sanctuary, appearing as if it had descended from heaven itself. Its great roof, darker than those of the gates we had just passed, conveyed an even greater sense of weight and majesty.
Here was the very pinnacle of Japanese beauty. For 1,400 years, the Main Sanctuary has been rebuilt every twenty years — sixty‑two times — with not a single deviation. Truly, this is the foundation of Japan itself, and my heart was stirred with awe.
Saying silently the Prayer for Amaterasu Ōmikami’s prosperity, I gently placed the sacred white stone I carried in both hands as an offering.
Dynamic Oshiraishi Cart Procession
At dawn on August 3, the vast sea visible from our inn in Ise was still wrapped in darkness. After about ten minutes by bus with fellow worshippers, we arrived at Futamiura for the sunrise ceremony, the sea breeze refreshing us as the sky began to lighten. Already gathered there were many companions of Kurozumikyō, wearing happi coats emblazoned with the two characters for “Ise” on their backs.
Facing the reddening eastern sky and the breaking waves, we chanted together Ōharae no Kotoba (the Great Purification Prayer) — a truly magnificent sound. In the midst of this spirited practice that seemed to swallow even the sea, the rising sun of Ise was especially moving. Our prayers for the blessings of Amaterasu Ōmikami, together with the fulfillment of the Bicentennial Grand Festival of Kurozumikyō, united everyone’s hearts anew.
In addition to the purification at Futami Okitama Shrine the day before, nearly 2,000 participants, purified again in body and spirit, gathered in the square. It was the formation ceremony of the “Kurozumikyō Oshiraishi Cart Procession Group.”
From the stage at the venue, I raised my voice:
“This year, as we prepare to welcome the Bicentennial of Kurozumikyō next October, the Shikinen Sengū of Ise Jingu 伊勢神宮式年遷宮— so deeply connected to the Divine Founder — will be solemnly conducted. Today’s Oshiraischi ceremony, following the earlier Okihiki 御木曳(timber-hauling) ceremony, is a precious opportunity to serve in worship. Please, with prayer in your hearts, hold the sacred white stones in both hands, offer them with devotion, and feel Amaterasu Ōmikami and the Divne Founder close to you. May you also deeply and gratefully sense your own identity as Japanese.”
The Okihiki timber procession and this Oshiraishi-mochi stone‑carrying rite are organized entirely by the local townspeople of Ise, who take charge voluntarily. Because I have long been close with four leading figures since the Okihiki event, both I and the Deputy Chief Patriarch were given special permission to serve freely this time as well.
On the festival cart, about thirty barrels of sacred white stones were piled high. They were pulled by two thick white ropes—each roughly 260 meters long—grasped by about a thousand people with one hand, while the other hand was raised to the sky as they shouted “Enya!” in unison and advanced together.
Having twice served in the Okihiki procession in Heisei 18 and 19 (2006 and 2007), I carried a strong wish to take part again in this rite.
It meant moving back and forth between the two long pulling ropes, joining both sides in perfect rhythm, raising our arms while shouting “Enya!” together. From the starting point to Uji Bridge, along about 800 meters of the street known as Oharai‑machi おはらいまち, we kept up the chant without pause for nearly an hour. More than that, each time our eyes met and hearts connected with fellow companions, the shared cry of “Enya!” was profoundly moving.
From the oldest at ninety‑two to the youngest children, every shout of “Enya!” brought smiles. Truly, men and women of all ages, becoming childlike in spirit, poured out refreshing sweat in joy.
After the dynamic “movement” of the Oshiraishi cart procession, everything shifted to a solemn pace as we crossed Uji Bridge, quietly advancing with the pure white stones in hand. The only sound was the crunch of white gravel beneath our feet. Ordinary worshippers respectfully stepped aside to open the path, and the familiar approach to the shrine took on a new, majestic atmosphere.
This absolute stillness on the way to the new sanctuary was a time of profound silence. The contrast between the intense movement and the deep quiet created a unique experience—an atmosphere unlike anything that could be found elsewhere.
Then, in the dazzling sight of the new sanctuary contrasted with the aged, dignified roof of the current Main Sanctuary to the east, I felt the nearness of new life being born.
In the meeting of opposites—dark and light, movement and stillness, even life and death—I could truly experience that life itself is born where such forces cross. It was a deeply moving and profoundly grateful day.
