　教主様は、様々な社会福祉活動に関わっていますが、この度、岡山県立岡山西支援学校と、不登校児のための学校法人希望学園に寄せられた一文を転載させていただきます。

The Chief Patriarch has long been involved in various social welfare activities. On this occasion, we reprint two pieces he contributed to Okayama Prefectural Okayama Nishi Special Support School and to Kibō Gakuen (“Hope School”), a private school for children unable to attend regular classes.

　岡山西支援学校は、昭和５１年、知的障がい児のための学校として、岡山県で初めて岡山県立西養護学校という名のもとに創立されました。それまでは、一般の小中学校で特殊学級としてあったものが、独立した学校として全国的に制度化されて生まれたものでした。

Okayama Nisih Special Support School was founded in Shōwa 51 (1976) as the first school in Okayama Prefecture for children with intellectual disabilities, under the name Okayama Prefectural Nishi School for the Handicapped. Until then, such children were taught in special classes within ordinary elementary and junior high schools. The new school was part of a nationwide system that established independent schools for them.

　いわば緊急避難ともいえる中で創立された当校は、旧来の他の施設を転用したもので、県立とは申せ学校としての体をなしていない状況にありました。そこで、教育後援会を作って広く県民市民の協力を仰ごうということになり、元岡山商工会議所会頭の梶谷忠二氏と、元岡山県教育長の川上亀義氏が副会長となって支えるからということで、教主様が教育後援会会長に就任されました。両氏亡きあとも、教主様は会長としておつとめになって今日に至っています。

Founded under what might be called emergency circumstances, the school initially repurposed older facilities and, though prefectural, did not yet have the full form of a proper school. Therefore, an Educational Support Association was created to seek broad cooperation from citizens of the prefecture. Mr. Kajitani Chūji, former Chairman of the Okayama Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Mr. Kawakami Kameyoshi, former Superintendent of Education for Okayama Prefecture, became vice presidents to support the effort, and the Chief Patriarch accepted the role of president. Even after the passing of those two gentlemen, the Chief Patriarch has continued to serve as president to this day.

　希望学園は、全国でも数校しかない不登校児のための私立学校で、岡山県の中央部に近い吉備中央町という山間地域にあって、全寮制でもって先生方は全人教育につとめられています。

Kibō Gakuen (“Hope School”) is one of only a few private schools in Japan for children unable to attend regular classes. Located in the mountain region of Kibichūō Town, near the center of Okayama Prefecture, it is a full boarding school where teachers devote themselves to holistic education.

　教主様は、この学園の教育後援会会長も懇請を受けて就任し、久しく様々な形でお支えになっています。

　「西支援」４０年の美
教育後援会会長　黒住宗晴

　岡山西支援学校の創立４０周年の今年の年頭、１月１６日より、山陽新聞社本社のギャラリーで、生徒１５０名の絵画などの作品展が一週間に亘って開催されました。

At the beginning of this year, marking the 40th anniversary of Okayama Nishi Special Support School, an exhibition of works by 150 students was held for one week from January 16 at the gallery of the Sanyō Shimbun headquarters.

　これは、社会福祉法人山陽新聞社会事業団（松田正己社長が理事長）の創立７０周年記念事業の一つで、この展覧会を皮切りに、社会福祉法人ももぞの学園、同旭川荘、そして全県選抜展が、本展に続いて４月から５月にかけて開催される、とありました。

This was one of the commemorative projects for the 70th anniversary of the Sanyō Shimbun Social Welfare Foundation (President Matsuda Masami of Sanyō Shimbun, the leading newspaper company in Okayama, serving as Director‑General). Following this exhibition, further shows were scheduled: by the Momozono Gakuen Social Welfare Foundation, by Asahigawa‑sō, and finally a prefecture‑wide selected exhibition, all to be held from April through May.

　開会に先立って、１５日の朝刊に１ページ使って、本校の生徒さんの制作風景が、写真の数々を使って紹介されました。ここでは、本校の代表選手ともいうべき光井亮太君（高等部２年）の、まさに一心不乱に作品づくりにつとめている姿と、すでに多くのファンのいる彼独特の作品が登場していました。

On January 15, the day before the opening, the morning edition of the Sanyō Shimbun newspaper devoted an entire page to photographs of the students at work. Among them was Mitsui Ryōta, a second‑year high school student and one of the school’s leading talents, shown wholly absorbed in creating his work. His distinctive pieces, already admired by many fans, were featured prominently.

　さらに、この一連の展覧会＝きらぼし★アート展＝の優秀作品を審査する、選考委員の備前焼の人間国宝伊勢崎淳氏、現代版画の高原洋一氏、また長く支援学校の教師として子どもたちの美術作品制作に関わってきた射矢諄一氏が、この展覧会に期待するところを交々語っていらっしゃいました。

Further, the outstanding works from this series of exhibitions—called the Kiraboshi (“Twinlke Stars”) ★Art Exhibition—were judged by a selection committee. Among them were Bizen ware Living National Treasure Master Isezaki Jun, contemporary printmaker Mr. Takahara Yōichi, and mr. Shiya Jun’ichi, who for many years as a teacher at the support school guided children in creating art. Each spoke of their expectations for this exhibition.

　１６日、出張先から帰宅しました私の目に飛び込んできたのは、山陽新聞夕刊の一面トップに掲載された開会の様子でした。

On the 16th, returning home from a business trip, what caught my eye was the front‑page headline of the Sanyō Shimbun evening edition, reporting the opening of the exhibition.

　生徒皆さんの喜び、校長先生はじめ先生方が胸熱くなられている姿が目に見えるようでした。翌日、早速、山陽新聞社本社に駆けつけた私は、玄関ロビーの上に掲げられた、４ｍ四方ほどの大きな高等部の皆さん方の作品に魅せられてしまいました。それは、明日の光を確信しているような青空が大きく画かれた中に、まさに飛び立たんとする躍動感あふれる「ペガサス」が印象的な大作でした。

The joy of the students, and the sight of the principal and teachers moved to tears, seemed almost visible. The next day, I hurried to the headquarters of the Sanyō Shimbun. In the entrance lobby, I was captivated by a large work, about four meters square, created by the senior high school division students.
It was a magnificent piece: a vast blue sky, painted as if certain of tomorrow’s light, within which a Pegasus, full of vitality and ready to soar, stood out impressively.

　これに、まるで対になるような形で、左の壁にこの社屋新築の時に設えられた伊勢崎淳氏の備前焼の陶壁が、ほぼ同じ大きさでありました。

On the left wall, almost as if paired with it, was a Bizen ware ceramic mural by Master Isezaki Jun, installed when the building was newly constructed. Nearly the same size, the two works faced each other in striking harmony.

　階段を上がった所にあるギャラリー（さん太ギャラリー）では、奇しくも河田校長先生と、同社会事業団の坂本専務理事にお会いできました。満面の笑顔の御二方にご案内いただいて、一つひとつの作品に見入りました。いずれもが、生徒さん方が真剣に取り組んだことが伝わってくる力作でした。それでいて力んだところのない、全く自然体の作品たちです。作り手が自然体であればこそ、見る人に直接飛び込んでくる力があるのかもしれません。

At the gallery (Santa Gallery) at the top of the stairs, I happened to meet Principal Kawata and Executive Director Sakamoto of the Social Welfare Foundation. With radiant smiles, they guided me as I looked closely at each work. Every piece conveyed the seriousness with which the students had engaged, and yet none were strained—each was entirely natural. Precisely because the creators were in a natural state, the works seemed to leap directly into the viewer’s heart.

　上手にやろうとか、人がどう見るかなど、こざかしいものが消えているだけに、人間本来のものが湧き出ているような作品ばかりでした。大家と称えられた芸術家方が、年を重ねて、つまるところは我を離れた無心な境地での作品をめざし、また、そこに至る自己とのたたかいともいうべき厳しい時を経て到達されるところに、ポーンと、その過程を乗り越えて立っているとも思えました。

These were works free of calculation—no thought of “doing it well” or “how others will see it.” Instead, they revealed something innate to humanity itself. Great masters of art, praised as luminaries, often in later years strive for works born of a selfless, detached state, reaching that point only after severe struggles with themselves. Yet here, the students’ works seemed to stand suddenly beyond that process, already embodying such pure expression.

　かのパブロ・ピカソが、“子どもの画いたような絵がかけるのに９０年かかった”と述懐したということを耳にしたことがありますが、「アール・ブリュット」と呼ばれるこうした子どもさんの作品は、こざかしいことに終始しがちな私たちへの警告のようにも思えました。

I once heard that Pablo Picasso remarked: “It took me ninety years to be able to paint like a child.” These works by children, often called Art Brut, seem to me like a warning to us adults, who so easily become entangled in cleverness and calculation.

　希望学園の小学校を卒業する６名の方々、さらに中学校を卒業する８名の方々、きょう感激の卒業式を迎えられましたことを、心からお祝い申し上げます。

To the six graduates of the elementary school of Kibō Gakuen, and to the eight graduates of the junior high school, I extend my heartfelt congratulations on reaching this moving graduation day.

　あなた方は、個性豊かなだけに人並み以上に苦しみや悲しみを抱いて、この希望学園に来られました。しかし、この自然の美しさに満ちた学園、そして心を込めて、きびしくも温かくご指導下さる先生方に恵まれて、きょうこうして卒業の日をお迎えになりました。

Each of you, with your rich individuality, carried burdens of suffering and sorrow greater than most, and thus came to Kibō Gakuen. Yet here, blessed by the beauty of nature and by teachers who have guided you with both strictness and warmth, you have now arrived at this day of graduation.

　皆様方は、学園創立２０周年の記念式典、また竣工なった屋内運動場・希望ホールの完成披露の集いなど、生徒さん方の中心になっていきいきと活躍されました。

You have played central roles in the life of the school—at the commemorative ceremony for the twentieth anniversary of its founding, and at the celebration of the completion of the indoor gymnasium, Kibō Hall—bringing vitality and joy to these occasions.

　嬉しく思いますことは、このような節目の集いのたびに、地元の吉備中央町の方々が次々と駆けつけて下さり、わがことのように奉仕して下さっていることです。このことはあなた方生徒さんが、いかに一生懸命学び活動しているかの表れです。とても有り難いことだと思います。

What brings me joy is that, at each of these milestone gatherings, the people of Kibichūō Town have come rushing to support, serving as if it were their own matter. This is proof of how earnestly you students have studied and engaged in activities. It is something truly to be grateful for.

　さらに、きょうのこの日を迎えたことは、親御さん方、保護者の方のお喜びはいかばかりかと思うと、私も胸が熱くなってまいります。

Moreover, thinking of the joy of your parents and guardians on this day fills my own heart with emotion.

　卒業、それはまた新たな出発です。どうか希望学園で学んだ年月を土台に、あなたにふさわしい新たな歳月を重ねられますよう、心から願い祈ってお祝いのことばといたします。

Graduation is also a new beginning. May the years you spent learning at Kibō Gakuen be the foundation upon which you build new years worthy of you. With heartfelt prayers, I offer these words of congratulations.
