Mr. Ōhara Ken’ichirō, Honorary Director of the Ōhara Art Museum in Kurashiki (the current Director is his eldest daughter, Ms. Ōhara Akane), together with his elder sister Ms. Ōhara Reiko and younger sister Ms. Shōda Yasuko, were raised from childhood with opportunities to enjoy classical music, thanks to their late father, Ōhara Sōichirō.
With a fervent wish to add music to Kurashiki, the city of art centered on the Ōhara Art Museum, and to welcome world‑class musicians visiting Japan to perform there, they founded the “Kurashiki Concert” in Shōwa 58 (1983). Held two to four times each year, it reached its 100th performance in August this year.
With the desire to share with the youth of Okayama the musical experiences that the three Ōhara siblings had enjoyed in their younger days, they consulted the Chief Patriarch. Thus was founded the “Association to Present Classical Music to Junior and Senior High School Students of Our Homeland” (abbreviated as Kurapure no Kai).
This was in Heisei 5 (1993), the spring marking the tenth anniversary of the Kurashiki Concert. With the cooperation of many companies in Okayama Prefecture and the support of generous individuals both within and outside the prefecture, each time the Kurashiki Concert has been held, about one hundred junior and senior high school students have been invited.
The Chief Patriarch has contributed a greeting message as President to the concert catalog on each occasion. In this issue of Michigokoro, we present his greetings for the 99th Kurashiki Concert held on June 23 and the 100th held on August 21.
In connection with the exhibition of Master Miwa Kyūsetsu XII of the distinguished Hagi ware family, held from October through February at Tenmaya in Okayama and subsequently in Hiroshima, Fukuyama, and Yonago, he requested a recommendation message. The Chief Patriarch provided such a message, which we also include here. (Editorial Office)
Kurashiki Concert No. 99
The city of Kurashiki is a presence of great significance, not only in our country but also internationally. In recent years, it seems that the city has been drawing attention from every quarter toward.
Last year, centered on the Ōhara Residence newly opened to visitors, the plaza within the Ōhara Art Museum also became a venue for a grand exhibition of works by Belgian floral artist Daniel Ost.
This year, beginning in January, some 150 masterpieces from past and present in the Ōhara Art Museum were displayed at the National Art Center, Tokyo, in an exhibition that could be called “The Ōhara Art Museum Comes!”—and it drew a great response.
Furthermore, in May, the G7 Education Ministers’ Meeting was held in Kurashiki, a development rich and powerful enough to make other cities envious.
All of these have been centered on culture and the arts. Yet what has moved me most deeply is a phrase I heard recently: “The supreme culmination of humanity’s artistic heritage—classical music.”
Amidst the masterpieces of the Ōhara Art Museum, the record concerts begun by the late Mr. Ōhara Sōichirō have today been continued by the three members of the Ōhara family under the name “Kurashiki Concert.” These concerts, inviting the world’s foremost musicians, have now reached their 99th performance.
Moved by the wish of the three Ōhara family members to share the Kurashiki Concert with the youth of their homeland, many people have offered their support. Thanks to their assistance, the junior and senior high school students invited through Kurapure no Kai now number as many as 9,714.
Once again, I offer heartfelt respect and gratitude not only to the three members of the Ōhara family who sustain Kurapure no Kai, but also to all those who have given their generous support.
Kurashiki Concert No. 100
There was a man of great stature both as a mathematician and as a thinker: Prof. Oka Kiyoshi (1901–1978). When he received the Order of Culture, Emperor Showa asked him, “What is most important in mathematics?” He replied, “Emotion.”
By emotion he meant the heart of inspiration and gratitude. It is said that only upon this foundation can the world of intellect become true intellect.

Congratulations on the 100th Kurashiki Concert. From the experiences of the three members of the Ōhara family, who from childhood cultivated the heart that is moved by beauty, they approved the founding of the “Association to Present Classical Music to Junior and Senior High School Students of Our Homeland” (Kurapure no Kai). Since then, opportunities have been given to young people to experience moments of inspiration. With the understanding and support of many generous individuals, up to the present a total of 9,894 junior and senior high school students have shared such moving experiences.
It warms my heart to think how richly and greatly their emotions have been nurtured.
Moreover, this 100th anniversary concert is a grand event with nearly 300 young talents standing on stage. The years leading to this day, the inspiration of the occasion itself, and the invited junior and senior high school students gathered in the audience—all of these will allow us to witness true education in action.
Twelve Generations of Blood — On the Exhibition of Miwa Kyūsetsu XII
Since his dramatic debut in the ceramic world with the white Hagi “High Heel” fifty years ago, the creative life of Master Miwa Kyūsetsu XII has been years of rare and remarkable self‑renewal.
My first encounter with his works was twenty years ago, in Heisei 8 (1996), at the grand exhibition held at Tenmaya in Okayama. Amidst the monumental golden works that dominated the hall, I found myself standing transfixed before a piece filled with such vitality that it seized my heart. It was Himiko. Though I have not yet attained it, I felt as if I were being challenged—asked what I was truly doing as a religious man.
Until then I had only seen him in photographs, but at that time I met Master Miwa Kyūsetsu XII in person for the first time. I was impressed by his gentle manner and quiet way of speaking. His gaze, firmly grounded yet directed far into the distance, spoke of his daily life and his creative stance, leaving a deep impression on me. I strongly felt that he was a man who, through ceramics, continually sought to question the fundamental essence of being human.
On that occasion, he remarked: “Ceramics have often been understood in terms of wabi or sabi, as something that draws one inward into the work. But conversely, should there not also be a way for ceramics to speak outward, or even to launch an attack?”
The splendor symbolized by gold, together with the cracks and black tones running through his works—these conveyed to me his reverence for the life that emerges as if sparking between opposing poles: glory and collapse, life and death. Indeed, I cannot forget his words: “There is no escape from death. Precisely because there is death, life and love stand out all the more.” They come back vividly to me even now.
Viewing the works presented in this exhibition, a certain remark by a Japanese tanka poet came to mind:
“Those who compose tanka attain liberation through their poetry.”
This means that when one devotes oneself entirely to composing poems, there comes a moment of emptiness—of selfless, thoughtless clarity. What is born within that state becomes a truly living poem.
The fierce struggle that Master Miwa Kyūsetsu XII has carried on with himself up to the present reminds me of a tanka composed by an earlier poet:
“By overcoming oneself, one becomes one with the divine.
Thus from now on, Heaven and Earth shall be within my own being.”
In much the same way, I see the works in this exhibition as born within a world of great, quiet prayer, where the Master has placed himself.
The innocent clasped palms of a child, the graceful and modest hands of a woman in prayer, and flowers that seem to promise the light of tomorrow—these are prayers for a peaceful world, a hymn to life for generations to come.
The white Hagi “High Heel,” after fifty tumultuous years, has now reached this point. Truly, it is deeply moving.
I sincerely hope that many visitors will stand in this exhibition hall and savor to the fullest the bloodline of twelve generations of the Miwa family, and the beauty of self‑renewal born in the present generation.
